Description: Since the 1970s, schools have increasingly used suspension and expulsion to deal with student behavior, including minor infractions. Suspensions in Oregon schools increased from 66,000 in 2005 to 107,000 in 2008. Most suspensions and expulsions are for non-violent offenses. Students of color, students with disabilities and other vulnerable children have been disproportionately impacted. Learn about the state and federal laws that govern school discipline, as well as school district policies and practices.
Youth, Rights & Justice is implementing a new volunteer legal services program, called the Youth Justice Corps, to represent students facing school exclusion. Attend this CLE to learn how you can help (please note: there is no obligation to volunteer simply by attending).
Thank you to Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt for sponsoring this free event!
